Cor! What A Bridge For Corbridge!

old bridge corbridgeA Victorian railway bridge which has stood tall for more than a century despite the ravages of the British weather, has been getting a makeover from HBPW.

Corbridge railway station serves the town of Corbridge in Northumberland, and is located on the Tyne Valley Line running between Newcastle and Carlisle.

Managed by Northern Rail, the small station, which boasts around 80,000 passengers a year, features a footbridge which spans the rail line, linking two platforms.

However, it had fallen victim to the ravages of time and weather forcing AMCO Rail, in partnership with Network Rail, to ask HBPW to produce plans for a like-for-like replacement bridge.

The aim was to make the modern steel structure almost identical to the original wrought and cast iron bridge.

HBPW design engineer, James Cable, said: “Many of these old bridges have huge historic value locally, hence the need for an identical looking structure, and it is always nice to know that we are playing our part in preparing the station bridge for the next 100 years, only this time the steel structure should last a little longer,” added James.
