The Engine Shed

Project Insight

Case Study Details

HBPW is proud to have contributed to the significant redevelopment of Newbury station, a project poised to enhance the economic prospects of the Berkshire town.

The multi-million-pound redevelopment, which commenced in 2021, includes new ticket gates, an open-plan ticket area, an enlarged waiting room, a cafe, toilets, a lift, space for 300 bicycles, and a new 160-space multi-storey car park.

In collaboration with Nationwide Engineering Group, HBPW played a pivotal role in the development of 'The Engine Shed,' a facility housing three new business growth units designed to support the town's broader economic goals. Located on the south side of the station, this area also benefits from improved pedestrian and bus access.

HBPW Partner, Emyr Parry, highlighted the collaborative efforts: "Great Western Railway, West Berkshire Council, Berkshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), Network Rail, Nationwide, and HBPW have worked together to bring this comprehensive scheme to fruition."

HBPW's contributions included designing the building foundations and steelwork for The Engine Shed, a single structure divided into three units. This building aims to enhance Newbury's economic profile.

A spokesperson for Nationwide Engineering added: "The steel frame building features a Vieo steel cladding roof, traditional brickwork walls, and curtain wall glazing, creating an impressive industrial aesthetic."
