HBPW was tasked with creating 3D visuals to provide an early concept of scheme aiming to update Alfreton Station to be disability-friendly, under the Access For All programme.
Network Rail engineers were keen to understand the potential appearance of the scheme as part of their budget planning process.
Tom Shiels explained, “Although planning permission wasn’t required for this project, Network Rail wanted to ensure that we could effectively address the needs of Persons with Reduced Mobility (PRM). We achieved this by introducing two lift shafts, one on each platform.”
Shiels further recommended replacing the two access staircases with a refresh to the footbridge side panelling. Additionally, lift shaft landings were added, significantly improving accessibility. The 3D visuals allowed Network Rail to clearly initiate plans for these enhancements.
To accommodate the new lift shafts, the platforms will be locally widened. This approach minimizes the impact on existing platform capacity and ensures that work can be carried out with minimal disruption to passengers. Utilizing the existing footbridge also provided a cost-effective solution for engineers.
The use of 3D visuals by HBPW played a crucial role in demonstrating the feasibility and benefits of the proposed accessibility improvements at Alfreton Station. Network Rail was able to visualize the enhancements which will eventually provide better access for all passengers.
