Major Award for HBPW

HBPW has won a major award for its work on the new rail crossing over the River Tees near Stockton.

Managing Director, Paul Withers, attended the annual dinner of the North East branch of the Institution of Civil Engineers to pick up the prestigious Robert Stephenson Award, alongside Network Rail and Carillion. It was for the best job in the North East in excess of £4m.

HBPW was called on to produce an innovative and cost saving redesign of the new rail crossing, following the discovery of old foundations belonging to the world’s first railway suspension bridge.

The redesign was vital as it ensured the historic remains were protected, enabling the new £4.5m, 82-long Network Rail bridge to stay on schedule.

As Network Rail’s Project Manager Simon Barraclough commented at the time of construction, it was thanks to HBPW’s innovative thinking that work was able to progress relatively quickly. "Had we stopped work to argue the finer detail, we might still not be out of the ground."

Paul Withers commented: "Invariably all jobs have their challenges and this one was no exception, however, by working as a team, all parties were able to come to the table, sort the problems and ensure the project came to fruition without serious interruption and the minimum of delay.

"This award is testimony to everyone’s hard work and we are all absolutely delighted."
